Exotic Eats: Greece

Greek food ranks up there as some of my favorite of our entire trip. And, while I was already familiar with many of the typical ingredients used in Greek cuisine (olives, olive oil, feta cheese, tomatoes, eggplant, yogurt, lamb, pita bread, etc.), I was surprised by the fact that I literally did not have one bad meal during my two and a half weeks in Greece.  The quality of food was consistent and affordable and the dining experience was always entertaining.  Greek people love hosting you at their restaurants and we made several friends along our culinary tour through Athens and the Cyclades Islands.  I have included my favorites below:

Exotic Eats: Germany

While we only spent three days in Munich for Oktoberfest, I did enough eating and drinking to go up a size in my dirndl.  I had always heard about the delicious and prevalent beer at Oktoberfest, but I never knew that the food was so tasty. I am not sure if the food was so good because of all the beer I was consuming or if the dishes were simply the perfect compliment to the ambrosial ales.  Whatever the reason, I was pleasantly surprised by the fantastic Bavarian cuisine.

Exotic Eats: Switzerland
I don’t know how lactose intolerant people live in Switzerland because chocolate and cheese always seems to be on the menu.  I thoroughly enjoyed sampling both during our two and a half week trip through Switzerland.

Exotic Eats: Italy

For most of my “Exotic Eats” entries, I have focused my writing on one or two unique and memorable dishes that I encounter in a country or region.  Unfortunately my recent tour through Northern Italy confirmed the rumor that the food in the south is better than the north.  While I did have some delicious meals on our trip, there is not one dish that stands out. So instead, I have decided to compile a short list of things that my recent time in Italy has made me appreciate about Italian cuisine.

Exotic Eats: Ukraine

I found the food in Ukraine to be tasty and straightforward. – nothing special but always filling and enjoyable.  Mike and I had the opportunity to try food and drink at both city restaurants (in Kiev and Lviv) and in the countryside.  While we enjoyed both, we especially appreciated the home-cooked meals that we sampled while staying with a local family in Kosmach.  (I have never drank so many shots of vodka or eaten so much homemade cheese in my life.)

Exotic Eats: Southern Africa

The food in Africa as a whole was not my favorite. To be fair, a good majority of my time touring Africa was spent either camping or volunteering….not exactly the time for culinary greatness.  While we tried to cook while camping, I think that I ate more PB&J in two weeks than I did during my entire childhood. And while volunteering in Zambia, we were served delicious comfort food (stick to your rib casseroles, roasts, and pastas) but it was not the authentic cuisine. However, there were a few dishes throughout our travels through Southern Africa (Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa) that are worth mentioning.
